Saturday, Mar 1st, 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM – Duette Wagon Tour: Spring Wildflowers – Discover over 20,000 acres of Duette Preserve from a covered wagon. With a Master Naturalist guide and a Park Ranger, discover the story of restoration and wildlife. Witness Pine Flatwoods, River Floodplain, and Scrub ecosystems, and maybe even spot a Florida Scrub-jay! Program suitable for all ages. This program will provide participants with basic archery instruction, familiarization with archery equipment, and instruction in shooting techniques that create successful archers. Our Audubon guide will lead participants on a tour through Emerson Point’s coastal hammock and mangrove habitats. Check out the “locals” as well as the migratory birds that are wintering here. Wednesday, Mar 5th, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM – Soar in 4 Family Night – Soar in 4 occurs the first Wednesday of each month in downtown Bradenton. Families visit demonstration tables facilitated by Manatee County teachers, non-profit organizations, and volunteers to learn how to use various materials to support the ‘spotlight book,’ as well as incorporate take-home items to continue to play, create, learn, and explore at home together. These monthly events provide families with the resources and information to become their child’s best ‘first teacher’ at home. All activities are aligned to classroom learning. Friday, Mar 7th, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM – Oyster Shell Drilling for Vertical Oyster Gardens and Oyster Anchors – Volunteers wanted! Come help us create oyster reefs! We will be using drill presses to drill holes into oyster shells that will be used in future volunteer programs to make Vertical Oyster Gardens and Oyster Anchors. VOGs will be installed under docks and other structures to provide a surface for live oysters to attach themselves. The Oyster Anchor pins will be inserted into the Manatee River bottom. This is a crucial step in making oyster reefs and you can help make a difference in the health of our ecosystem. Oysters feed by filtering and cleaning water, a key to a healthy estuary and our marine ecosystems. Clean water allows the sunlight to penetrate the sea floor, allowing sea grasses to grow, which helps all creatures, including manatees! Volunteer under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Long-sleeved lightweight clothing is recommended. Ice water, gloves, safety glasses, masks and all other materials will be provided. Please bring a water bottle. Reservations are required. Monday, Mar 10th, 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM – Sunset Tai Chi at the NEST – Join us for this monthly class at the NEST! At sunset on the second Monday of the month, Dr. Brian Nell, a certified Tai Chi instructor, will lead the group through the gentle movements of Tai Chi. This is a great way to shake off the stressful work week. Improve your balance, loosen your joints, and improve flexibility as you relax and breathe. Friday, Mar 14th, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM – Crooked River Full Moon Paddle – Join us for a relaxing guided paddle in a secluded bay at Manatee County's newest conservation property, Crooked River Preserve! As the sun dips below the horizon, we'll turn our attention to the east and watch the full moon rise. If the skies are clear, we should be in for an incredible treat as the rising moon reflects the orange rays of the setting sun. Program suitable for ages 16 and older. Children under 16 years old may attend with a parent or guardian in a tandem kayak. Program sponsored by Big Waters Land Trust in partnership with Manatee County. This is an easy paddle; however, it is not suitable for beginners, and some prior paddling experience is required. All participants must wear a life jacket while on the water. Single and tandem kayaks, paddles, and life jackets are available to borrow for $25 per person. If you would like to borrow a kayak, please choose the "borrow a kayak" ticket type. Otherwise, participants must have their own canoe, kayak, or SUP and safety gear, including a life jacket and whistle. Participants should bring a water bottle and wear clothing appropriate for the weather. Please wear shoes that strap or tie to your feet, no flip-flops. Your feet and lower legs will get wet and sandy. You may wish to bring a towel and dry clothes/shoes to change into after the paddle. Please note there are NO restrooms or water fountains on-site.
