County Commissioners set to name Commission Chambers in honor of longtime Commissioner Pat Glass
MANATEE COUNTY, FL (Nov. 20, 2018) – Manatee County Commissioners next week are scheduled to name their meeting chambers the Patricia M. Glass Commission Chambers in honor of the County's first female County Commissioner, Pat Glass.
During an 11:30 a.m. time-certain agenda item at the Nov. 27 County Commission meeting, the Board will honor Glass, who was not only the Commission's first female but also one of its longest serving and most accomplished commissioners. Glass retired from the Board in 2006 but will attend the meeting next week with friends and family.
The resolution naming the chambers in her honor will highlight some of the most notable achievements during Glass' long career in public service. She was initially elected to the Commission in 1978, became Chair in 1980 and served as Chair seven times during her tenure on the Board.
She was a passionate advocate for the elderly and led efforts to improve local healthcare, affordable housing, environmental protection and drinking water resources for Manatee County residents. She served on the Board of Governors for the Southwest Florida Water Management District and as Chair of the Environmental Action Commission, building coalitions that became instrumental to ensuring responsible stewardship of water resources and natural systems.
Glass was instrumental in the authorization and funding of major public assets such as the Manatee County Administrative Center, the Manatee County Public Safety Center, the Manatee County Jail and Port Manatee. She served as the Chair of the Tourist Development Council five times and led the community effort to purchase and preserve the Powel Crosley Estate.
