MANATEE COUNTY, FL (August 8, 2024) – Manatee County Animal Welfare (MCAW) is awash in stray pets in the wake of Hurricane Debby.

Since August 1, 2024, a total of 129 stray animals have been brought into the Manatee County Animal Welfare facilities. To expedite and streamline the reunification process, the shelter is currently waiving all fees associated with reclaims and adoptions. Staff is also extending stray holds for a few of the flood affected areas.

If your pet went missing during the storm, please plan to visit the MCAW Bishop location (5718 21st Ave. W., Bradenton) to see if we have your lost pet and check with other local animal shelters. Pet owners are advised to make sure microchip information is up to date. Posting lost dog information on social media channels may also help reunite pet and owner more quickly.

While some of these 129 animals are on “hurricane hold” for a two-week period at the Bishop shelter, there are dozens of other dogs, kittens and rabbits currently available there for adoption. In addition, there are more than 100 other dogs waiting for their fur-ever families at the Palmetto Shelter (305 25th St. W., Palmetto) and 49 cats are available at Cat Town (216 6th Ave. E., Bradenton).

“If you’ve lost a pet or are searching for a new companion, we are here to help,” said MCAW Animal Care Division Manager Jennifer Hume. “With over 300 animals currently in our care, visit MCAW to see if you’re missing pet has been found . . . or to meet our wonderful animals in need of a loving home.”
