MANATEE COUNTY, FL (November 15, 2024) – Manatee County Emergency Management is alerting residents to the occurrence of king tides expected between November 15 and 20, 2024. King tides, the highest predicted high tides of the year, often result in localized flooding in low-lying and coastal areas. During this period, residents and visitors are urged to be cautious and take proactive steps to minimize risks to safety and property.
King tides are naturally occurring events that take place when the Earth, Moon, and Sun align, causing the gravitational forces to create higher-than-normal tides. While king tides are not caused by storms, they can exacerbate flooding during heavy rainfall or strong winds.
Expected Impact Areas in Manatee County include coastal and low-lying neighborhoods, areas with poor drainage or near tidal waterways and roads prone to flooding during high tides.
Manatee County Emergency Management is making the following safety recommendations:
- Avoid Flooded Roads: Do not drive through standing water. Even shallow water can cause vehicles to stall or lose control.
- Secure Property: Move outdoor furniture, vehicles, and other belongings to higher ground if they are at risk of flooding.
- Monitor Updates: Stay informed by checking local weather reports and tide charts.
- Prepare for Delays: Plan extra travel time in case of detours due to flooded roads.
